MADISON, Wisc. – After the first of three rounds of the 2018 NCAA Madison Regional, No. 12 Arizona State women's golf is in fourth place, shooting an even round as a team. Following Wednesday's third round, the top six teams (and top three individuals not on those six teams) from each of four regional sites will advance to the NCAA Championships in Stillwater, Okla. May 18-23.
In their 26th consecutive season competing at NCAA Regionals, the Sun Devils are one of just 10 Division I teams to earn a spot at Regionals every year since the tournament's creation.
"We had a very solid day and I am proud of our team on how we started and how we finished," said head coach Missy Farr-Kaye. "We gave back a few shots out there, but we will make a few adjustments on course management and be ready for day two. Sophia did a great job leading us with a two-under round today while she is still recovering from a sprained ankle. We saw really solid play from every player on the team and we're looking forward to day two on Tuesday."
No. 31 Virginia shot the best round of the day (9-under 279) followed by No. 4 Duke (-5) and No. 6 USC (-3). Oregon State and No. 36 Wisconsin also round out the top six following the first of three rounds.
Individually, senior Sophia Zeeb shot the Sun Devils' lowest round of the day (70), tying her lowest round of the season, and is currently tied for seventh among the 96-player field. Fellow senior Roberta Liti shot an even 72 and is tied for 18th followed closely by sophomore Olivia Mehaffey who shot a 73 (T26).
Freshman Raquel Olmos (T26) is tied with Mehaffey while Madison Kerley rounded out ASU's team, shooting a 74 (T43).
The regional competition continues with a single round on Tuesday and Wednesday. On day two, Arizona State is paired with fellow Pac-12 member, Oregon State, and Wisconsin. The Sun Devils tee off between 8:54-9:30 am CT (6:54-7:30 am PT).
