PALO ALTO, Calif. – It may be a different season, but the Pac-12 women's hammer throw champion was the same as Sun Devil senior Magdalyn Ewen nabbed her third-straight title in the event, as well as a second-straight shot put title in her hunt for another sweep at the first day of the conference championships.
In her quest for back-to-back gold in three events, Ewen opened her final Pac-12 appearance by setting the meet record to take the crown yet again in Palo Alto. She launched the hammer 74.38m/244-0 feet and won the competition by more than 30 feet.
Kaylee Antill finished fifth to score for the Devils as well, and both throwers will step into the ring again Sunday for the discus throw final.
Ewen's day wasn't done, though. She returned to competition later in the day in the women's shot put and won that title in dominating fashion again by breaking the meet record with a heave of 19.22m/63-0.25 feet.
"I'm really happy to win both," Ewen said. "The records were a bit of bonus, but I was pleased with both of my marks. I've been trying to hit 19 meters consistently and stay in that 74-range in the hammer."
The Sun Devils went one-two in the shot put with redshirt freshman Samantha Noennig finishing runner-up in her first Pac-12 event. Noennig will also throw the discus Sunday morning, looking to wrap up her first conference championships with two all-conference honors.
"It feels great," Noennig said. "We've been training together all year, so for her to win and me to take second, everything just turned out fabulous."
Jessica Barreira and Kristiana Warth rounded out ASU's day one scoring in the long jump, javelin throw and pole vault.
Barreira threw the javelin 44.52m/146-1 feet on her third throw, then passed on her remaining three throws to head over to the long jump where she finished sixth.
As for Warth, the senior vaulter took seventh in her final Pac-12 Championships for the second consecutive season.
Mason Ford's personal best 7.36m/24-1.75-foot jump was good enough for sixth in the men's long jump despite passing his final three jumps. The senior will return tomorrow in the high jump with Elijah Hughes and Ryan Bright.
The track was mainly used for preliminary races Saturday with just a handful of distance finals taking place.
Alethia Marrero extended her first and only Pac-12 Championships run when she easily won her heat of the 800-meter prelim and put up the top-qualifying time of the day to claim the top-spot heading into Sunday.
In the men's 800, Kevin Wilkinson sat outside of the qualifying places heading into the final turn, but the true freshman churned out a victory in the prelim and earned a lane tomorrow with the third-best time of the day.
"He ran extremely poised and executed the race plan well," assistant coach Cory Leslie said. "For a true freshman to come out and make a Pac-12 final the way that he did is awfully impressive. He put himself in a position to be able to come back tomorrow and just see what he can do against a stacked field."
Another Devil in his first conference outdoor meet advanced to the 400-meter hurdles final in Khalil Parris.
The Pac-12 Championships continue Sunday for ASU. Ewen, Antill and Noennig open the day for the maroon and gold in the women's discus at 1 p.m. PT, and the meet runs until the team award ceremony at 6:25 p.m.
