LOS ANGELES – Alethia Marrero headlined the final day of a hectic weekend for the Sun Devils in Los Angeles with her historic effort in the 800-meter run at the Mt. SAC Relays Saturday.
The senior lined up in a field of elite half-milers, including former NCAA champions and All-Americans, and finished seventh in a season's best 2:04.55. The time gave her the fifth spot outright in ASU history as she had previously been tied for fifth with her 2:05.33 from her Sun Devil debut.
Marrero's mark keeps her in the top-10 in the region and the top-three in a loaded Pac-12 field. The conference has produced 15 All-Americans and four NCAA champions since 2013, and this year has six women in the top-15 in the West.
With Marrero's mark today, the Sun Devils have produced three of the fastest times in school history in two events this weekend with Bianca Tinoco's 2:08.14 in the 800-meter run and Khalil Parris' 51.03 400-meter hurdles mark from Friday afternoon.
Shaunie Morrison moved up the regional list with her 13.42-second run in the 100-meter hurdles. She came into the weekend already with one of the fastest times in the conference, but her run Saturday moved her to fourth in the Pac-12.
Morrison finished 10th in the hurdles and also ran the opening leg for the Sun Devil 4x100-meter relay team that took 10th.
Over in Long Beach, Cole Riddle's clearance of 5.20m/17-0.75 feet gave the freshman a sixth-place finish in the pole vault. While the mark doesn't affect Riddle's position in the region, as he is still in the top-10 in the West, Friday's marks from two other Devils put four of coach Ron Barela's men in the top-35.
Jessica Barreira also finished sixth with the best leap of her section in the women's triple jump at the Beach Invitational, and Mason Ford cleared 2.05m/6-8.75 in the high jump to take 10th.
Next up for the Devils is a trip south for the Desert Heat Classic next Saturday.
