SEATTLE – The Sun Devil women's track and field team earned the indoor Territorial Cup point Saturday in Seattle as they outscored the U of A women and finished eighth in the MPSF.

Just like day one, the Devils got on the board early thanks to a great showing in another women's throwing event.

Maggie Ewen won her second title of the weekend and fourth MPSF crown in her illustrious indoor career.

"The thing about Maggie is, we have a great tradition in the throws and we've never had a student-athlete in that event that has been as consistently as excellent as she has been," coach Greg Kraft said, "We couldn't be more proud of her and what she's accomplished."

She came into Saturday having never claimed the women's shot put title indoors, but also with a lead in the conference of more than five feet thanks to her 19.20m/63-0.00-foot heave that put her at third in NCAA history from earlier this season.

While she didn't need to launch the shot that far in Seattle to claim gold, Ewen still managed to break the MPSF meet and Dempsey Indoor facility records during the competition as she recorded a mark of 18.98m/62-3.25 feet.

Coincidentally, the facility record that Ewen broke belonged to former University of Oklahoma champion Tia Brooks, who set the record while under the guidance of current Sun Devil throws coach Brian Blutreich.

"Only four women in NCAA history have ever thrown over 19 meters in the indoor shot, and coach Blutreich has coached three of them," Kraft said. "That's an extraordinary comment, and I think the women we have in the program, their belief in his training system and their belief in themselves, that tradition will continue to remain strong."

Freshman Samantha Noennig also scored in the shot put, taking fifth and providing ASU with four more points in the event.

Shaunie Morrison improved on her championships debut a season ago when she took fifth in the 60-meter hurdles to give the Devils four team points.

The women picked up three more points when Jessica Barreira and Darreyl Woodson took seventh and eighth, respectively in the triple jump.

ASU followed up their impressive outing in the men's pole vault Friday by scoring in two more events Saturday, including the high jump and 4x400-meter relay.

Elijah Hughes scored for the Devils when he cleared 2.10m/6-10.75 on his third and final attempt at the height. He took sixth in the competition, and Mason Ford nearly scored, but finished ninth.

The Devils took second in their heat in the 4x4 in 3:17.27 and finished eighth overall. Khalil Parris, Quinten Bankston, Jesus Llanez and Herbert Polk combined to secure the point for ASU.

After all of the events were scored, the Sun Devil women finished in eighth with 35 points and the men took 11th, scoring 22.

"I think it'll be competitive outdoors," Kraft said. "Both programs right now aren't scoring as many points as they'd like and that's going to make it a very close competition during the Pac-12 Championships as well."

Most of the team's indoor season came to a close as the final heat of the men's 4x400-meter relay crossed the finish line at Dempsey Indoor, but Ewen's season will feature one more meet. She will travel to College Station, Texas, to take on the best in the nation at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the weight throw and shot put, March 9-10.
