TEMPE – After improving on the school record in the weight throw at the Don Kirby Elite, Sun Devil senior Magdalyn Ewen followed up her performance Friday with another phenomenal one as she launched the world-leading mark in the shot put to win the competition Saturday in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Ewen won the shot put with a throw of 19.20m/63-0.00 feet, nearly two feet better than her previous personal best and Sun Devil school record she recorded a couple of weeks ago in Texas.
With the mark, she not only extends her lead in the conference and NCAA, both by nearly seven feet, but also takes the world lead by two feet and moves to third all-time in collegiate history.
The 2017 hammer throw champion is one of just four women in collegiate track and field history to record a mark in the indoor shot put of more than 19 meters. Only former Mississippi national champion and Olympian Raven Saunders, and 2012 Olympian from Oklahoma Tia Brooks have recorded better throws than Ewen.
The final day of the Texas Tech Shootout saw several Devils steal the spotlight, including Jessica Barreira, who won the collegiate title in the long jump.
Her jump of 5.94m/19-6.00 feet with her third attempt gave her the crown and put her at fifth in the MPSF. Along with her triple jump mark from Friday afternoon, Barreira now sits in the top-10 in two events in the conference with less than two weeks to go until the MPSF Championships.
Bianca Tinoco topped her personal best in the 800-meter run up at the Iowa State Classic and recorded the seventh-best time in school history when she crossed the finish line in 2:10.14. She improved on her previous best my more than a second, and is now within striking distance of the top-five in one of the most competitive events in the conference.
Back in Lubbock, Mason Ford was less than an inch away from cracking into the Sun Devil top-10 in the high jump when he finished third in the competition with a height of 2.09m/6-10.25. He takes the ASU lead for the 2018 indoor season, and moves into the top-10 in the MPSF.
Ryan Normand ran the fastest time by a collegiate athlete at the Shootout in the 3,000, clocking an 8:48.85 and taking second overall in the competition. In Ames, two Sun Devil women broke five minutes when Alexis Nichols and Anna Pruter recorded times of 4:52.24 and 4:57.81, respectively.
Sophomore Sha'Maya Flanagan led the way for the sprinters in the Lone Star State as she finished eighth in the 200-meter dash in 24.31. The time was her best of the season in the event and the best by a Sun Devil woman overall this season. Flanagan's 2018 campaign has been full of personal bests so far under coaches Devin West and Javonie Small.
She came into the season with personal bests in the 200 and 400 of 24.91 and 57.50, respectively and has since seen her times drop every outing to where they stand today at 24.31 and 55.04.
Next weekend will be the last weekend of competition in the regular season for the Sun Devils, and the last weekend to improve their seeding before the conference championships in Seattle, Feb. 23-24. ASU will head to the NAU Tune-Up in Flagstaff, and the Alex Wilson Invitational in South Bend, Indiana.
