Sun Devil Lacrosse Returns Home to Face Oregon and Colorado

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Arizona State Lacrosse team returns to Tempe this weekend for a pair of Pac-12 contests at Sun Devil Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium. On Friday, the Oregon Ducks come to town for a 3 p.m. matchup. The Sun Devils will then turn their attention to the No. 23 Colorado Buffaloes, who visit for a 1 p.m. showdown on Sunday afternoon. Both of the Sun Devils' games this weekend will be broadcasted live on the Pac-12 Network.

Coming off the Bay Area road trip, the Sun Devils showed the ability to compete at a high-level for stretches, looking to put it all together over a full 60-minutes. In the game against No. 19 Stanford, a shorthanded defensive unit put forth a great effort despite the challenging circumstances. They showed flashes of brilliance, holding Stanford scoreless for a 12-minute segment and three separate nine-minute segments, but a second half run in which the Cardinal scored five goals in five minutes put the game out of reach. Facing-off with the Golden Bears in Berkeley, the Sun Devils would put forth an encouraging second half effort despite trailing a majority of the contest. The two teams played even after the break, with Arizona State generating and delivering on several scoring opportunities.

Emily Glagolev has been on a mission lately, and her performance this weekend was no different. She once again led the Sun Devils' offensive unit, recording three points in both of the games in the Bay.  The sophomore is up to 16 assists this season, breaking the previous school record of 15 which was set last season by Glagolev herself, who finished 2018 tied with Kerri Clayton recording a team-leading 15 assists. Glagolev has played her best against the best, posting 20 points over her last six games, four of those coming against Top-25 competition. Glagolev's ten assists in conference play tie her for first in the Pac-12, while her 21 points against Pac-12 competition is good enough for fourth in the conference. After a rare game in which she was held without a goal, attacker Kerri Clayton made up for it with a strong offensive outing against California. The redshirt junior attacker scored a pair of goals, giving her five multi-goal games this season and 16 in her career. She has now scored at least one goal in 25 of her 28 games since becoming a Sun Devil. Clayton has made adjustments in her game due to the fact that she has garnered a majority of the attention from opposing defense. Her ability to facilitate the offense has been on display in recent games, recording six of her seven assists in conference play.

Goalkeeper Berkeley Bonneau continues to shine in net, responding well despite facing a high volume of shots. The junior ranks second in the Pac-12 and 11th in the country recording 10.82 saves/game. She has been a mainstay as the last line of defense for the Sun Devils, playing 657 of a possible 661 minutes in goal this season. Thanks to another double-digit save performance on Sunday, Bonneau now has seven double-digit save performances in 2019 and 16 in her ASU career.

Freshman midfielder Paige McGlothlin continues to come into her own as her first season in Tempe moves along. She has at least one goal in five of the last six games, helping her become one of only five Pac-12 freshmen with 12 goals this season. McGlothlin is part of a freshman class that has made an immediate impact in Tempe. To this point of the 2019 season, 11 members of the freshman class have seen playing time (Buckner, McCaffrey, McGlothlin, Martel, Kroah, Hood, Anotonucci, Brodsky, Odell, Class, Payne). The group has started a total of 43 games, producing a combined 32 points (22 goals & 10 assists), 73 ground balls, 33 caused turnovers, and 37 draw controls.

"The performance of the young players has definitely been positive so far this season," Coach Martinez Connor mentioned. "It is encouraging to see them already make an impact and the experience they are getting now will pay off down the road.".

The Sun Devils look for a repeat performance of the first matchup between the two sides, when they take on Oregon on Friday at 3 p.m. In their first road game of the season, Arizona State jumped out to a 6-0 less than six minutes of the game and they didn't look back, earning the program's second-ever Pac-12 victory. Emily Glagolev and Julia Burns led the way offensively, both enjoying record-breaking performances. Glagolev posted eight points (five goals & three assists), while Julia Burns dished out six assists, both of which represented school records. The respective performances still represent the highest assist and point total in a single game for an individual in the Pac-12 this season. For the first time at the Division I level, the Sun Devils earned a running clock on a Pac-12 opponent in the first half of the victory in Eugune. Oregon is led by Head Coach Chelsea Gamble, who brings her Ducks to Tempe with a 2-10 record. Stick around postgame, as your favorite members of the Sun Devil Lacrosse team will be signing autographs at the Stadium. Arizona State Lacrosse also welcomes the AZGL Elite Lacrosse team as well as the Washington Premier FC Soccer team, who will be recognized at halftime. For the third time this season, a Sun Devil Lacrosse game will be aired on Pac-12 Network. If you are planning on traveling to Friday's game against Oregon, please be advised that there will be road closures from 5 a.m-2 p.m. due to a USA Triathlon Event. "Oregon may not have had much success lately, but we are preparing for an extremely motivated team," Coach Martinez Connor observed. "Our team will need a performance similar or better to the one we put together in Eugene in order to take care of business." The second game of the weekend features Arizona State's fifth matchup against a Top-25 team, this one coming on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they take on No. 23 Colorado. Junior Goalkeeper Berkeley Bonneau was the story in the first matchup between the two sides, setting a new program-record with 20 saves. The previous record was also held by Bonneau, who made 17 saves in March of last season against Colorado. Bonneau was a big reason why the Buffaloes struggled on free-position attempts (3-for-11), as she made several incredible saves on the eight-meter opportunities. Colorado is led by Head Coach Ann Elliot Whidden, who brings her Buffaloes to town with a 5-5 overall record. Facing one of the nations toughest schedules, Colorado has played seven Top-25 teams this season. They currently sit second in the Pac-12 with a 4-1 record, with a showdown with No. 14 USC looming on Friday before they make the trip to Tempe. Sun Devil Lacrosse will be running a Lace up for Lax promotion, with fans encouraged to bring a pair of sneakers to be donated to a local shelter. ASU will make their second appearance of the weekend, and fourth of the season, on Pac-12 Networks (Mountain Channel).

"Colorado has played some of the best teams in the country," Coach Martinez Connor remarked. "The full 60-minute game we keep talking about, but have yet to achieve, will be necessary in order to be competitive in this game" Watch both of the Sun Devil Lacrosse games this weekend on the Pac-12 Network. You can also stream live through the Pac-12 Digital platforms and the Pac-12 Now App. Visit the links for more information on how to watch the game against Oregon and Colorado on Pac-12 Network.
