TEMPE – Coming off of its first Pac-12 weekend sweep since April of 2018, the Sun Devil women's tennis team prepares to face New Mexico State for a mid-week makeup match Wednesday at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
The original matchup with the Aggies was scheduled to be the second-leg of a Sunday double-header in early February, but rain forced the matches to be canceled. This time around, the Devils and Aggies will hit the courts at 10 a.m. MST.
ASU's opponents from Las Cruces are enjoying a nice run of results, winning six of their last eight outings after opening the season 2-4. Led by second-year coach Emily Wang, the Aggies sit at 2-1 in the WAC with their sole conference loss coming last weekend on the road in the Valley.
As for the Devils, ASU recently ended its five-match slide in dominant and dramatic fashion last weekend against Pac-12 foes No. 38 Utah and Colorado. The Devils swept the Utes to record their first win in more than a month Friday, then completed a nail-biting comeback on the Buffaloes Saturday in Tempe to climb closer to the .500 mark.
At 7-8 (2-4) on the season, ASU needs to win at least four of its final six matches to finish the regular season above .500 to become eligible for the NCAA Team Championships.
The second-ranked doubles tandem in the nation will look to bounce back Wednesday after suffering just its second loss of the season against a tandem from Colorado last weekend.
No. 2 Hattingh/John-Baptiste and No. 65 Alicea/Hampton have lifted the Devils to plenty of doubles points this season, but against the Utes, ASU got a win from Kolarova/Slaysman to secure the point, and Alicea/Hampton went two-for-two against their Pac-12 counterparts on the weekend.
Court one's No. 109 Ilze Hattingh is looking for her first win since upsetting Stanford's court one player back on the Ides of March. Despite a spell of defeats in February, Savannah Slaysman co-leads the team with Tereza Kolarova in singles. The two have six apiece and Slaysman just won back-to-back matches for the first time this season.
The mid-week battle with the Aggies precedes the Devils' road trip to the Pacific Northwest on the weekend. ASU will take on No. 35 Washington State and 13th-ranked Washington Friday and Saturday in Pullman and Seattle, respectively.
