@ASUWrestling Finishes Competition at World Team Trials

ROCHESTER, Minn. – On the final day of World Team Trials, Zahid Valencia nearly shutout fellow former Junior World silver medalist and two-time National Team member Alex Dieringer in a best-of-three series at 79 kg.

With the wins, Valencia advances to Final X in State College, Pa. on June 16, where he will face 2018 U.S. Open winner Kyle Dake.

Also of note this weekend, Brandon Courtney earned two shutout victories in his best-of-three finals at 57 kg to win the UWW Junior World Team trials at the weight class.

Courtney could potentially have a place on the Junior World Team in September. As the returning World champion at the weight class, Daton Fix could request a wrestle-off (time and date TBD) for the Junior Team spot if he is unable to secure a Senior Team spot.

The Sun Devils had an impressive weekend on the national stage in preparation for the world stage this fall.

Junior World Freestyle Championships will take place in Trnava, Slovakia Sept. 18-23 while Senior World Championships are set for Budapest, Hungary Oct. 22-28.
