TEMPE, Ariz – Arizona State University's Men's Golf begins the
Matt Thurmond era in Maui, Hawaii this weekend in the opening round of the Amer Ari Invitational. Here's the latest news surrounding the Devils as they head to the first tee:
The Tournament Lineup: Coach Thurmond's starting five for the Amer Ari Invitational is:
- Jared Du Toir, Sr.
- Alex Del Rey Gonzalez, Fr.
- Chun An Yu, Fr.
- Blake Wagoner, Fr.
- Nicolo Galetti, Sr.
Rahm's Big Day: As the current Sun Devil Men's Golf team went through a practice round at Nanea Golf Club, they got updates on one of their teammates from last season, as
Jon Rahm won The Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego Sunday in dramatic fashion. Rahm birdied the 17
th hole, and scored eagles at both 13 and 18 to secure his first PGA Tour win. Three other Sun Devil alumns also finished in the top 30, with Pat Perez finishing fourth (his third top five finish this season), Phil Mickelson 14
th and Paul Casey 28
th. In addition, C.T. Pan, who competed for Coach Thurmond at the University of Washington, finished tied for second, three shots behind Rahm.
Need Someone To Root For?: Rahm and Mickelson are part of the field for this week's Waste Management Phoenix Open at the TPC of Scottsdale. Mickelson is a three-time champion of the event, while fellow Sun Devil alum Bob Gilder won the Tournament in 1983, when it was held at the Phoenix Country Club.
It IS Hawaii, after all: Prior to the start of the Tournament, coaches and players had the opportunity to enjoy some leisure time at the beach. According to Coach Thurmond's judgement, senior
Nicolo Galletti showed the most skill riding the waves, Jared Du Toit won the beach sprints (video of which can be found at Coach Thurmond's Twitter (@MattThurmond).
