AKRON, Ohio—Arizona State wrestling's freshman Tanner Hall finished as the 125 kg runner-up on Sunday at the 2016 University Freestyle Nationals at the Louis and Freda Stile Athletic Field House.
A 2016 NCAA qualifier, Hall started off the competition with an 11-0 tech over Tyler Kral, and followed with a 10-0 tech over Brock Cvijanovich in the second round. In the third round, Hall defeated Yousiff Hemida, 9-2, and followed with an 8-3 decision over Michael Hughes in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinals, Hall faced off against Ty Walz for the third time in his career, on Sunday defeating him 2-1. During the 2015-16 season, Hall wrestled Walz in ASU's dual against Virginia Tech (Jan. 9) and in the opening round of the NCAA Championships (March 17).
Hall faced another rematch in the best-of-three finals when he drew 2016 NCAA Runner-up Nick Gwiazdowski. Hall fell in two straight matches to Gwiazdowski, 3-1 and 4-1, respectively. Hall and Gwiazdowski met in the Midlands Championships heavyweight finals on Dec. 30, Gwiazdowski taking the 4-3 win.
Three more Sun Devils placed in the Greco Roman competition: Jacen Petersen and alum Kevin Radford placed fourth at 75 kg and 85 kg, respectively, while Robbie Mathers finished in seventh place at 71 kg.
