2003 (RS-Sophomore): Was ASU's opening day starting pitcher against Hawaii-Hilo... went 3-2 with a 2.30 ERA appearing in 25 games with seven starts... also started ASU's regional opening game against Central Connecticut State... in seven starts was 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA, giving up 30 hits in 26.0 innings and recorded 22 strikeouts... out of the bullpen he was 1-2 with a 3.14 ERA... threw 7.0 scorless innings with career-high five strikeouts in win over Gonzaga (2/14) in the first game of the Coca-Cola Classic... named to the all-tournament team at tournament in Surprise, Ariz... went 2-2 with one save and a 5.56 ERA during his redshirt freshman season in 2002... finished his career with a 5-4 record and a 3.55 ERA in 50 career appearances... drafted in the 21st round of the 2003 MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays... signed with the Blue Jays and made his professional debut with the Auburn Doubledays of the Single-A NY-Penn League.
2002 (RS-Freshman): Was 2-2 with one save in team-high 25 appearances out of the bullpen... recorded a 5.56 ERA, but was especially tough when inheriting base runners... allowed only 10 of 36 inherited base runners to score... tough with the bases loaded with five strikeouts... picked up first career win with two shutout innings vs. Arizona (3/22)... career-high four strikeouts in two innings vs. Oregon State (5/24)... had a string of 5.2 straight scoreless innings from 4/14 (UCLA) to 4/26 (Notre Dame)... played in the summer for the Madison Mallards in the Northwoods League where he was named the No. 9 prospect in the league.
2001 (Summer - Twin City Stars): Made 17 appearances and was 2-0 with a league-leading 12 saves... struck out 26 batters and walked only 12 in 20.1 innings... made both mid-season and final CICL All-Star teams... set league record with his 12 saves and his five consecutive during the season also set a league record.
High School: A 2000 graduate of Joliet Catholic Academy... earned three varsity letter in baseball and football... captain of baseball team junior and senior year on the diamond and in 1999 on the gridiron... twice earned all-conference honors... all-State senior year... named all-city sophomore through senior years... honorable mention USA Today All-American in 2000... named one of top five athletes in the state of Illinois... compiled 189 strikeouts and a 1.14 ERA during junior year... posted a 1.89 ERA his senior year... best individual performance was a 18-strikeout, one-hit performance.
Personal: A Business/Communications major at ASU... parents are Michael and Georgene Sopko of Joliet, Ill... has one brother, Michael Jr. (26) who played baseball at Western Kentucky... one sister, Mandie (23)... born December 16, 1981 in Joliet, Ill... full name is Mark Steven Sopko... enjoys playing PlayStation 2 and hanging out with friends.
