COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Senior Scott VonSchoff and freshman Gavin Meadows finished ninth and 12th, respectively, in the 200-yard freestyle to lead Arizona State in the second day of the NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships, Friday at Rec Center Natatorium in College Station, Texas.
VonSchoff, who entered the meet with the 21st-fastest qualifying time, swam 1:36.34 to win the consolation final and take home ninth-place points. In addition to earning a personal-best time, VonSchoff also moved into ninth-place on ASU's all-time 200y free list.
Meadows, who notched the seventh-best time in ASU history of 1:36.31 at the Pac-10 Championships, clocked in at 1:36.64 to place 12th overall. Winning the event in the championship final was USC's Klete Keller in a pool record 1:34.43.
Powered by VonSchoff and Meadows, ASU moved up five spots from 19th to 14th overall with 56 total points. Penn State is just ahead in 13th with 58.5 points, while Georgia trails at 15th with 43 points. Texas is the current No. 1, with a two-day total of 447.5.
In preliminary action of the 200y free, sophomore Anders Lyrbring finished two spots out of the consolation final with an 18th-place time of 1:37.17. Junior Bo West finished 27th in 1:37.82.
Also failing to qualify for an event final was freshman Nick Brunelli, who finished a mere tenth of a second behind is personal-best to place 29th in the 100y backstroke in 49.28. Brunelli is fifth on ASU's all-time 100y back list.
In diving action, senior Marc Briggs totaled 465.75 points on the 3-meter springboard to place 24th.
Competition concludes Saturday with finals in the 1650y free, 200y back, 100y free, 200y breaststroke, 200y butterfly, 400y free relay and on platform diving.
