Ames, Iowa – No. 29 Sun Devil Women's Tennis (8-4, 3-1 Big 12) handled No. 59 Iowa State (8-4, 2-2 Big 12) with a 4-0 sweep Sunday morning at Iowa State Tennis Facility in Ames, Iowa.
The maroon and gold have won five of their last seven matches and return to Tempe to continue conference play against West Virginia and Cincinnati starting on Friday at 4 p.m. MST against the Mountaineers.
Rebounding from Friday's result against Kansas, the No. 79 doubles pair Karin Altori and Sara Svetac made quick work of their match winning 6-1. Then Emilija Tverijonaite and Aiya Nupbay won their second straight match with a 6-3 win and clinching the doubles point for the Sun Devils.
The freshman came through for the Sun Devils in a big way. Karin Altori made quick work of her match dropping only three games, winning 6-2, 6-1. Then, Aiya Nupbay won her third straight match winning 6-2, 6-1 over Valeska San Martin to give ASU a 3-0 lead in the match.
No. 29 Tverijonaite battled in the first set, but a late break point helped the sophomore win 6-4. Then after holding serve in the second set being tied 3-3, she was able to break through to win the last three games, securing the victory for the Sun Devils winning 6-4, 6-3 and her second-ranked win of the season.
Senior Patricija Spaka, Sara Svetac won their opening sets and were ahead in the second set when the match was called. Taylor was trailing in her match 2-5 as Tverijonaite clinched the win for the Sun Devils.
