TEMPE – No. 23 Sun Devil Women's Tennis (7-3, 2-0) finished the first week of Big 12 conference play with a 4-0 sweep over No. 51 BYU (10-5, 0-2) Saturday at Whiteman Tennis Center. Giving them a 2-0 start in conference play, and the victory gives the Sun Devils a 5-0 record at Whiteman Tennis Center to start the season.
The match began in exciting fashion as both teams fought hard to take the doubles point. ASU and BYU split victories on courts two and three with Karin Altori and Sara Svetac getting the win, 6-3.
The attention turned to the Sun Devils' top pairing of Patricija Spaka and Lily Taylor whose match came down to a tiebreak at 6-6. After being down 0-3 in the tiebreaker, the duo rallied muiltple times to then defeat the BYU pair 9-7 in the tiebreaker. The duo extended their streak to move to 9-0 on the season and gave the Sun Devils a 1-0 lead in the match. The pair also moved to 3-0 in tiebreakers in doubles this season.
In singles, Spaka and Taylor followed up their late execution with pure dominance as they each cruised to victory in singles play. The freshman won her match 6-1, 6-4 and Spaka moved to 7-0 on the year in singles with a 6-3, 6-1 straight-sets win to extend the Sun Devils' lead to 3-0.
The maroon and gold then leaned on sophomore Emilija Tverijonaite to complete the sweep as she closed it out for the Sun Devils winning 6-3, 6-2, winning the last three games in the second set.
