Sophomore Sara Svetac vs. LMU

SAN DIEGONo. 35 Sun Devil Women's Tennis (5-3, 0-0 Big 12) underclassman played a critical role in the team's 4-0 sweep over No. 29 San Diego (5-6, 0-0 WCC) Saturday afternoon at Hogan Tennis Center in San Diego. The doubles pair Lily Taylor and Patricija Spaka remained unbeaten this season as sophomore Emilija Tverijonaite clinched the match for Arizona State.

Sophomore Sara Svetac remains unbeaten on the season when playing in the #2 slot, moving to 4-0 on the season, winning in straight sets. Freshman Karin Altori notched her fifth win of the year 

In doubles Patricija Spaka and Lily Taylor clinched the doubles point on court #1 with a  6-4 victory over the ranked pair No. 19 Claudia de las Heras & Kailey Evans.

The second Sun Devil pair Sara Svetac and Karin Altori came back from a two-game deficit down 1-3 and won four out of the next five games to take a 5-4 lead and won the match 6-4 for their fifth win of the season. 

Emilija Tverijonaite and Aiya Nupbay fell on court #3, 4-6 after falling short of a comeback in doubles.

For singles, Altori made quick work of her first set winning 6-0 then Svetac and Tverjonaite managed to win the first sets of their matches. Svetac got out to an early 3-0 lead and never looked back to conquer the opening set. Meanwhile, Tverijonaite got an early 2-0 lead and managed to win the set 6-3.

Altori would later give the Sun Devils their second point of the match with a straight-sets win, 6-0, 6-3 on court #5. Then Svetac would clinch the Sun Devils third point of the match with a straight sets 6-2, 6-3 win, making it her fourth win of the year. 

Senior Patricija Spaka fell in the first set but bounced back with a 6-4 second-set win to force a third set. Taylor and Evans both were triumphant in their opening set tiebreaks, securing the first set 7-6. 

On court #1 Tverijonaite faced a 2-5 deficit in the second set however she persevered and won five straight games to secure the set and the match for the Sun Devils, winning 6-3, 7-5 over No. 26 Kailey Evans. It's her first ranked win of the season moving her to 4-2 on the year. 

Spaka was leading in the third set 3-1 when her match got called, the senior remains unbeaten in singles play this spring at 5-0. Evans was also leading in the second set 3-2, and Taylor was about to start a third set when the match ended.

LOOKING AHEAD:
The Sun Devils return home for the first time in three weeks to open Big 12 play with a pair of conference matchups hosting Utah on February 27th at 4 p.m. MST, then they'll host BYU on March 1st at 1 p.m. MST at Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe.
