TEMPE, Ariz. – Although they no longer occupy the same conference, a solid west rivalry will continue.
Arizona State University head women's basketball coach Natasha Adair announced the Sun Devils have agreed to a home-and-home series with the Oregon State Beavers. The two teams will meet in Tempe on Sunday, November 17 as part of the 2024 Briann January Classic. Next season the Sun Devils will travel to Corvallis to take on their longtime Pac-10/Pac-12 foe.
Except for the 2020-21 season when the two teams did not meet due to Covid-19, the Sun Devils and Beavers have squared off at least one time on an annual basis going back to the 1985-86 season.
Contests between the two squads were must-see TV between the 2010-11 and 2022-23 seasons when 13 of their 22 games were decided by six points or less, including six games in which the margin of victory was three or fewer points.
A 57-51 win over the Beavers in the 2017 Pac-12 Tournament quarterfinals snapped a seven-game OSU winning streak in the series and started a stretch in which the Sun Devils came away with victories in five of six meetings. Included in that span was a double-overtime 79-76 ASU victory in Corvallis. OSU's lone win in that sequence was a 64-62 nail-biter in Corvallis, a contest in which an OSU buzzer-beater was the difference.
The 175th win of Adair's career was a memorable one. In her first season as head coach of the Sun Devils in 2022-23, ASU willed its way to a 75-73 victory over the Beavers, a game in which OSU led by as many as 17 in the second half. Led by Tyi Skinner, who scored 19 of her game-high 27 points in the final 20 minutes, the Sun Devils posted their second-largest comeback in school history.
