TEMPE, Ariz. -- Sun Devil senior, Jemma Purfield has been called-up to join the English U23 at their friendly against Sweden June 9, in Bollnäs, Sweden.
"I am so very proud of Jem," head coach Graham Winkworth said. "To be called up to hopefully earn yet another cap for your country is an honor at any level. The U23's is just one step away from the full England Team coached by former England and Manchester United star, Phil Neville."
Jemma has been a constant scoring threat for the Sun Devils since arriving on campus in the summer of 2017. In her first season in the Marron and Gold, Purfield led ASU in
Purfield, a Beverly, England, native, played her first two seasons of collegiate soccer at South Alabama where she led the Jaguars in goals (11) during the 2016 season en route to being named the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year, as well as overall Player of the Year honors.
"Jemma took a huge risk following me from South Alabama where she won everything both with her team and as an individual. We felt that playing for ASU, the biggest school in the nation in the best soccer conference would potentially provide her the exposure to both her national team and professional clubs.
I am so happy that all the hard work and sacrifices she has made are coming to fruition. She is a great young lady and incredible leader. We all want to wish her the best of luck next month in Sweden."
A graduate of Cottingham High School, Purfield earned Sports Personality of the Year during her senior season. She excelled on the high school pitch, and earned a spot on both Durham Women FC and Doncaster Rovers Belles' roster, becoming Doncaster's youngest-ever signing.
