Throwers, Vaulters Wrap Up Weekend in San Diego

SAN DIEGO – A small group of Sun Devils made the trip to the Pacific Coast for the Triton Invitational this weekend, including Sun Devil senior Magdalyn Ewen and freshmen standouts Samantha Noennig and Cole Riddle.

Before the Invitational began Friday morning, Ewen threw at the Chula Vista Throws/Vault Meet at the Olympic Training Center just outside of San Diego in the discus throw Thursday afternoon.

She finished second, but in the process moved up on the school record list to second all-time with a launch of 62.47m/204-11.50 feet. Although the throw does not apply to the NCAA season, it is a personal best for Ewen, and moves her to within nine feet of the school record held by former Olympic silver-medalist Leslie Deniz since 1983. Only Coleen Reinstra has held her record for longer than Deniz as she set the high jump bar for the Sun Devil women back in 1980.

At the first day of the Triton Invitational, Ewen took the hammer and discus throw crowns, and Kaylee Antill finished sixth in the hammer while Noennig took 10th in the same event.

Noennig followed up the hammer finish by taking 13th in the invitational discus, and Antill finished fourth in the open discus with a season's best throw of 47.34m/155-3 feet.

Saturday saw Noennig record a big personal best in the shot put with a throw of 16.79m/55-1 feet that moves the freshman to sixth in school history. Noennig already had a place in the top-10 in the region coming into the weekend, but this mark puts her at seventh in the West and fifth in a stacked Pac-12 conference.

The Sun Devil men got involved in the action Saturday as well. Four Sun Devil pole vaulters jumped in San Diego and three finished in the top-10 of the competition with Matthew Eckles taking 11th.

Nathan Hiett cleared 5.10m/16-8.75 feet to finish fifth and the freshman Riddle finished just behind him in sixth but did not take his final attempt at 5.10m. Riddle's fellow freshman Michael Chadwick finished eighth.

While this weekend was one of the slower ones of the season, next weekend will be busy for coach Greg Kraft's Devils as they return to Southern California for three meets in the Los Angeles area.

The Mt. SAC Relays and Bryan Clay Invitational begin Thursday and will both run through Saturday, and the Beach Classic in Long Beach runs Friday and Saturday.
