TEMPE – The Sun Devil women's tennis team has added another five-star recruit to its lineup for the 2018-19 campaign in Florida's own Samantha Alicea, coach Sheila McInerney announced Thursday.
"We're excited to have Samantha join our women's tennis program this August," McInereny said. "Samantha will be a great addition to our young team. We feel her ceiling is very high and she absolutely loves to play tennis, which is a recipe for success for sure."
A senior at Palmetto Bay high school in Palmetto Bay, Florida, Alicea is considered the No. 5 recruit in the state according to tennisrecruiting.net.
She's put together a 27-21 record in tournaments this season with two wins coming against blue chip recruits, nine over fellow five-star girls and she's been dominant against opponents rated less than five stars with a 16-1 record.
"Samantha's skill set will allow her to be a force in both singles and doubles," McInerney said. "She is aggressive from the backcourt, possess a big serve and has sound volleys. She's also an excellent student, so her transition to college and collegiate activities should be seamless. We're definitely excited for her future at ASU."
She currently sits at No. 153 in the USTA standings and last October advanced to the USTA Florida Level 3 final.
Alicea joins early commit Cali Jankowski of Carlsbad, California, as the Devils' 2018-19 signing freshman class. With Alicea joining Jankowski in the fall, the Devils will have two recruits in tennisrecruiting.net's top-100 list. ASU joins USC, Stanford, Washington and Oregon as Pac-12 programs with at least two commits on the list, while Utah has three.
