TEMPE – With the home slate wrapped up, the Sun Devil track and field team hits the road for the first time this outdoor season as a handful of Devils head to the coast for the Triton Invitational in San Diego.
Among those traveling this weekend will be senior Magdalyn Ewen, whose historic and dominant weekend at her final home meet a week ago earned her USTFCCCA Women's Athlete of the Week and Pac-12 Women's Field Athlete of the Week honors for the second time in the young season.
Ewen leads the NCAA in all three of her events – shot put, hammer throw, discus throw – and she is joined by two more Sun Devil throwers who each hold places in the top-25 in the West Region in one of their respective events.
Samantha Noennig, a redshirt freshman and U.S. junior champion, sits at an impressive eighth in the region in the shot put with her mark of 16.65m/54-7.5 feet. She is one of just three freshmen in the top-25 in the event, and is in the top-35 in the discus while Kaylee Antill is 24th in the hammer throw. Both Antill and Noennig will compete this weekend.
On the men's side, just the pole vaulters will make the trip to the Golden State.
Cole Riddle is coming into the meet having cleared a personal best height of 5.35m/17-6.5 feet in his first ever outdoor meet as a Sun Devil. The third-place finisher from the MPSF Championships leads the conference and is seventh in the nation as the only freshman in the top-15 in the vault.
Senior Nathan Hiett will also make the trip after his personal-best leap from last weekend as well. He moved up to sixth in school history while Riddle debuted on the list in fourth. The school record has been held by Nick Hysong for more than 20 years. The Olympian cleared 5.70m/18-8.25 feet back in 1994.
Michael Chadwick and reigning pole vault champion Matthew Eckles join Riddle and Hiett on the trip and in the top-35 of the region. Including senior Grant Sisserson, all five of ASU's men's vaulters find themselves in the top-eight in the conference in the event with Riddle and Hiett at first and third.
The women's invitational hammer throw opens the Triton Invitational at 9:30 a.m. PT Friday. The women's invitational discus will follow at 1:30 p.m with the open sections scheduled for 3. Saturday's events include the women's open and invitational shot put, which both start at 2 p.m., as well as the men's invitational pole vault at 3 p.m.
