TEMPE – Arizona State dropped its second Pac-12 match of the season to defending conference champion No. 28 Stanford Friday in Tempe.
The Devils were at full strength for the first time in two weeks with the return of Sasa Klanecek to the team, but the freshman's addition wasn't enough as the women of Stanford were able to close out the match before Klanecek could make her mark on court five.
"We competed pretty well," coach Sheila McInerney said. "We were in it for sure in the singles, but Stanford was a little bit tougher than we were today. There were some bright spots definitely with Ilze, Nicole and Sasa in singles, and it's too bad Ilze and Lauryn couldn't finish on No. 1 doubles because they were up on a top-five team."
In doubles, Stanford took courts two and three, and Hattingh/John-Baptiste had a two-game lead on the No. 3 doubles duo in the nation before their match was suspended.
"The doubles was a little disappointing," McInerney said. "Third doubles was off the court really quickly and I know we can play better than that."
The combination of Lauryn John-Baptiste and Ilze Hattingh remains a perfect one in 2018. The two newcomers have gone unbeaten through the first 15 matches of the season with an 11-0 record.
While the Cardinal took the match 4-0, the Devils were up on the remaining three courts before Emily Arbuthnott defeated Savannah Slaysman on court four to clinch the match for the visiting side.
Hattingh had match point on court two against No. 64 Melissa Lord, senior Nicole Fossa Huergo was up 6-4, 5-3 on No. 98 Caroline Lampl and Klanecek was a point away from tying the second set 3-3 in her match, already up a set.
"I think we rebounded pretty well in singles," McInerney said. "We won three first sets, we were looking good, but we knew we were going to stop at four because we only have six kids and with Sasa coming back after her injury it's really 5-and-a-half. We didn't want to risk anything with the heat and another tough one tomorrow."
ASU doesn't have much time to dwell with a streaking Cal team visiting the Whiteman Tennis Center Saturday at noon.
"There were some bright spots, but there's no moral victories," McInerney said. "We'll just have to take what we can from this one and get ready for a good Cal team on Saturday."
