TEMPE, Ariz. -- Following a series sweep at the No. 20 California Golden Bears this past weekend, sophomore G Juarez and freshman Danielle Gibson have been recognized by the Pac-12, earning Pitcher of the Week and Freshman of the Week honors, announced by the league office Monday.
The Pitcher of the Week nod for Juarez marks the third consecutive week Juarez has earned the honor, marking the first Sun Devil to win the award in three straight weeks, and the first Pac-12 pitcher to win it three times in a row since All-America Danielle Lawrie (Washington) won it four straight weeks in 2010.
Pac-12 Softball Pitcher of the Week/4 times in a row
2010: Danielle Lawrie, Washington (Apr. 19, Apr. 26, May 3, May 10)
Pac-12 Softball Pitcher of the Week/3 times in a row
2018: G Juarez, Arizona State (Mar. 26, Mar. 19, Mar. 12)
2004: Alicia Hollowell, Arizona (Feb. 24, Mar. 2, Mar. 9)
2006: Angelica Selden, UCLA (Feb. 28, Mar. 7, Mar. 14)
Juarez, a lefty from Glendale, Ariz., continued her stellar 2018 campaign last week by closing out Arizona State's series win over No. 1 (and previously undefeated Washington) on Monday. The sophomore continued to deal in the circle, opening ASU's three-game series with a 10-inning complete game shutout of the Golden Bears. In the outing, Juarez struck out a career-high 17 batters, a mark that left her just two-strikeouts shy of Sun Devil legend Dallas Escobedo's ASU single game record of 19-strikeouts set in 2013.
On the week, Juarez posted a 3-0 record in four appearances in the circle that included two complete games. In her 22 innings pitched, Juarez allowed just two runs on ten hits while striking out 37 of the 80 batters she faced on the week.
Gibson, a first-year first baseman was instrumental in the Sun Devils' win in game three of ASU's series win over No. 1 Washington. The Murrieta, Calif., native came in clutch with what would be a game-winning two-RBI double (her second game wining RBI in the series against Washington).
On the week, Gibson hit at a .385 clip while drawing a team-leading four walks. The Freshman of the week honor is the first career Pac-12 weekly nod for Gibson, and marks the first Freshman of the Week honor for ASU since current senior Breanna Macha earned the honor in 2015.
