EUGENE, Ore. – The Arizona State women's tennis team dropped a tough road match against 22nd-ranked Oregon Sunday for just its first conference loss of the season.
For the second-straight weekend, the Devils were shorthanded and had already conceded court six singles and court three doubles to the Ducks before the women began play at the Student Tennis Center.
"It was a tough day for sure, and give Oregon credit because they came out and took it to us," coach Sheila McInerney said. "Not much else to say other than they outplayed us."
With Klanecek out again, ASU sent No. 48 John-Baptiste/Hattingh and No. 35 Kolarova/Slaysman out onto courts one and two to overcome the early 0-1 deficit.
The court two matchup went to the Ducks, 6-3, giving the hosts the doubles point before still-unbeaten John-Baptiste/Hattingh could finish their match.
Down 0-2, the Devils had a steep hill to climb heading into singles play without Klanecek's 9-1 record on the court.
The Ducks and Devils went back and forth on all five courts, trading leads until John-Baptiste took the set on court one, and Oregon took the early lead on the remaining courts.
Oregon went on to sweep courts five and two to grab the remaining two points and take the match, 4-0.
"We certainly need to put this one behind us quickly with Cal and Stanford around the corner," McInerney said.
ASU returns home to take on No. 26 Stanford Friday and No. 45 California Saturday at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
