SANTA MONICA, Calif. -- The Arizona State beach volleyball team (4-10, 1-5 Pac-12) wrapped up play at the 2018 Pac-12 South Invitational splitting a pair of highly-contested matches with No. 14 Stanford and No. 19 Washington, respectively, Sunday afternoon at Ocean Park Beach. 

The Maroon and Gold earned their first conference victory of the campaign edging out Washington, 4-1, in the latter of the two afternoon tilts. The upset victory was preceded by a 3-2 Arizona State loss at the hands of Stanford. 

In its second meeting of the season with Stanford, Arizona State managed a pair of victories on courts four and five, but ultimately fell in a 3-2 decision. 

Katie Cross and Cierra Flood (Fours) defeated Stanford's Payton Chang and Catherine Raquel in straight-sets, 21-18, 21-17, while Kate Baldwin and Sam Plaster (fives) rebounded from a set one loss to Kat Andeson and Caitlin Keefe garnering a Sand Devil point courtesy of a 19-21, 21-14, 16-14, victory.

Recording their fourth win of the season and first on a league-basis, the Sand Devils bested Washington, 4-1.

Arizona State's stellar sophomore duo of Katelyn Carballo and Ellyson Lundberg (threes) kick-started the effort defeating Washington's Carly DeHoog and Shayne McPherson, 22-20, 21-15. Baldwin and Plaster again slotted as the fives pair, extending their match win streak to three, topping Kara Bajema and Emma Calle, 21-19, 21-8. 

Following an Arizona State loss at the ones, Sydney Palmer and Kara Woodard, combined as the twos pair, pushed the Sand Devils over the top with a hard-fought, three-set, 15-21, 23-21, 15-12 win. Katie Cross and Cierra Flood followed suit earning their second win as pair on the day, with a three-set victory at the fours.

Up next, the Sand Devils will remain on the road, traveling to Albuquerque for a University of New Mexico-hosted tournament, March 30-31. The Maroon and Gold will compete in a series of duals over the course of the two-day event, set to take one Abilene Christian (10 a.m. PT) and Colorado Mesa (1 p.m. PT) on Friday, before rounding out the competition with a pair of duals with New Mexico (11 a.m. PT) and Abilene Christian (1 p.m. PT) on Saturday.
