SANTA MONICA, Calif. – The Arizona State Beach Volleyball team (3-9, 0-4 Pac-12) dropped a pair of matches against top-five teams in the first day of play at the 2018 Pac-12 South Invitational taking place at Ocean Beach Park.
The Sand Devils fell to No. 2 UCLA (16-3) in their first bout of the day before taking a set from No. 4 USC (13-6) in their afternoon match, falling to the Trojans 4-1.
In a rematch of the Sand Devils season opening match where ASU pushed then-No. 1 USC to five sets, the Sand Devils once again captured a set for a Top-Five Trojans squad in their afternoon match at Ocean Beach Park. Slated as the five pairs, the freshmen team of Kate Baldwin and Samantha Plaster each picked up their sixth victory on the season. Both Katelyn Carballo/Ellyson Lundberg (threes) and Katie Cross/Cierra Flood (fours) took their respective matches to three sets.
Katelyn Carballo and Ellyson Lundberg continued their strong play, pushing the No. 2 UCLA threes pair to a three-set match. The Bruins would earn victories in all five pairs in the first match of the day for the Sand Devils.
ASU looks to bounce back with a big opportunity presenting itself in the form of two nationally ranked opponents in day two of the Pac-12 Invitational. Tomorrow, the Sand Devils will take on No. 14 Stanford at 11 a.m. PT later facing off with No.19 Washington at 3 p.m. PT.
