MINNEAPOLIS, Minn – On the second day of the 2018 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving National Championships, another Arizona State swimming quartet notched All-American honors, this time in the 400 Medley Relay, on Thursday evening at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatics Center.
The Sun Devils kicked things off Thursday morning with the 200 Free Relay, totaling six events on the day to send a qualifier to every event on the heat sheet. ASU sent Cameron Craig, Andrew Porter, Evan Carlson and Patrick Park to the block, swimming a 1:18.58 to place 23rd.
Up next was the 200 IM where Daniel Comforti competed for ASU. The junior raced the fifth-fastest time in program history at 1:46.02 – also a personal best for Comforti – and now holds three of the top-10 fastest times for the event.
Porter and Reid Elliott both qualified for the 50 Free, one of the last events of the morning. Both took the block – Elliott in the first heat and Porter in the third – with Porter swimming a 19.34 to secure 25th place and Elliott in 47th with a 20.06. The marks were personal bests for both Elliot and Porter.
The 400 Medley Relay anchored the swimming events for the day, with the Devils comprised of Zach Poti, Christian Lorenz, Porter and Craig. The quartet raced to a 13th place finish (3:06.44) to secure a ticket to the B-Cut finals later that evening, and were the second relay team to notch All-America honors so far to total eight swimmers on the weekend.
The foursome clicked on all cylinders to secure a 10th place finish in the event with the second-fastest time in program history (3:04.33). The time was the fastest finish all season by a huge three second margin, with the top time – 3:03.63 swum by Richard Bohus, Lorenz, Porter and Craig – coming in 2017. Poti's 45.65 spilt for the backstroke is the 6th-best time in school history.
Over on the diving board, Youssef Selim represented the Devils on the springboard in the 1M dive. Selim finished with a score of 294.00, securing 32nd place in the event.
ASU is back in action tomorrow morning with the 100 Fly, and then followed by the 200 Free, 100 Breast, 100 Back, 200 Medley Relay and 3M Dive. Fans can follow the action by following @ASUSwimDive on Twitter.
