TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State men's tennis returns home after a four-game road trip to face the New Mexico Lobos on Saturday afternoon at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
The Sun Devils (10-6) host New Mexico in a non-conference matchup at the Whiteman Tennis Center, the 32nd time the two programs will face off in program history.
The Lobos roll into Tempe with a 10-6 record on the season after dropping a match 4-1 last week against New Mexico State. The squad is 3-2 over its last five games, including two wins over Wichita State and one over Brown.
New Mexico was unranked in this week's team ITA/Oracle poll, with the Devils placing No. 34. ASU is highlighted by the Pac-12 Player of the Week in Michael Geerts, who was recognized for his performances against No. 4 Ohio State in a midweek slate and a weekend trip to the 2018 BNP Paribas College Tennis Challenge where he went a perfect 4-0 in singles play and 1-1 in doubles play with Tim Ruehl.
Arizona State returns home after a 2-2 road trip, gaining national exposure in the process. Last week the Devils traveled to Los Angeles, first to take on reigning Big Ten Champion and NCAA Tournament team No. 4 Ohio State. The two teams took the court at the Griffin Club – one of the premiere country clubs in California – with the Buckeyes taking the matchup 4-2.
The loss was highlighted by a huge upset victory from Michaël Geerts who bested the No. 2 player in the country in Mikael Torpegaard. Geerts took just two sets to hand Torpegaard, who was ranked as high as 310 in the ATP before attending Ohio State, a 7-6 7-5 loss. Geerts is on a hot streak as of late, holding a 10-1 record in his last 11 games with three wins against ranked opponents.
The Devils headed inland to the Indian Wells Tennis Garden over the weekend to take part in the 2018 BNP Paribas Open College Tennis Challenge. Playing on the same courts as the likes of tennis legends like Rodger Federer, Novak Djokovic and the Williams sisters, ASU rolled into the tournament as the No. 1 seed.
Advancing all the way to the championship match of the tournament against California, ASU dropped a back-and-forth affair with the Golden Bears 4-3. In the process, Andrea Bolla extended his win streak to five games, and the Italian has not lost in over a month, last dropping a match on February 17 at San Diego.
