LOS ANGELES – Facing off against tennis titan No. 4 Ohio State, Michael Geerts' win over the No. 2 tennis player in the country wasn't enough, as the Devils dropped the match with the Buckeyes, 4-2.
As the Devils and Buckeyes took to the courts at the Griffin Club in Los Angeles this evening, it marked the first matchup between ASU and Ohio State since 1986. Although the Devils owned a 2-0 series record, the Buckeyes took this matchup after grabbing the doubles point early.
Pierre Louis Dodens and Thomas Wright dropped their match on court three in their debut as a pair, 6-1. Makey Rakotomalala and Andrea Bolla followed soon after, falling 6-4, and the match on court one was suspended after OSU clinched the doubles point.
In singles play, the Devils faced off against some of the top-ranked collegiate players in the country including No. 2 Mikael Torpegaard, No. 35 Kyle Seelig, No. 41 J.J. Wolf and No. 65 John McNally.
The Buckeyes pulled out to a 2-0 lead after Martin Joyce took a victory on court six over Will Kirkman, 6-1, 6-3.
With the Devils down 3-1 and singles play winding down, Michael Geerts showed poise and seniority on court one. The Belgian downed No. 2 Mikael Torpegaard to bring the Devils back within striking distance, down 3-2.
Makey Rakotomalala battled with No. 41 J.J. Wolf, Rakotomalala's fourth time on the season playing on court two, but ultimately fell to Wolf, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, to clinch the match for Ohio State.
