COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Maggie Ewen added another trophy to her collection Saturday at the final day of the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships when she finished fourth in the women's weight throw.
Although she fouled her first throw of the series, Ewen earned a spot in the final when her next throw landed at 21.89m/71-10 feet to move her into the top-eight.
She tied her personal best with a heave of 22.26m/73-0.5 feet with her third attempt and would go on to finish the event in fourth place for her ninth first-team All-America honor and fourth indoors.
"Everything's already been said about Maggie Ewen and none of it is an exaggeration," coach Greg Kraft said. "She had an outstanding weekend here, and beyond that she's been an outstanding student and athlete, and is really everything a Sun Devil should represent."
It was a one-place improvement on her 2017 performance in Aggieland that saw her finish fifth.
The finish gave Ewen and the Sun Devils 15 points for the meet, which put them in 13th place after all 17 events were scored. In total, with Ewen's indoor eligibility up, the Sun Devil shot put and weight throw record-holder will leave Arizona State with 24 points scored at NCAA Indoor Championships and an astounding 66 points scored at indoor conference championships.
Her four indoor All-America honors include her shot put national title from Friday night, and 40 of her conference points have come from her four titles – three-straight in the weight throw and one shot put crown.
Ewen's 2018 indoor season saw her break the school record in the shot put back in January, but it only stood for a month before she supplanted it with a throw of 19.20m/63-0.00 feet at the Don Kirby Elite in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The throw led the world for most of the indoor season, and moved Ewen to third on the NCAA's top-10 all-time list in the event.
She also broke the school's weight throw record at the Husker Invitational, but topped it again only a week later, again in Albuquerque. Her fourth-place throw Saturday tied the school-record mark.
Saturday's honor put a bow on Ewen's collegiate indoor career, but the reigning NCAA hammer throw champion will suit up for the Devils during the outdoor season to defend her hammer throw crown and build on her historic performance at the Pac-12 Championships from 2017.
"Last year, she did the unprecedented at the Pac-12 meet, winning the shot, hammer and discus," Kraft said. "But this is the conference of champions for a reason, and it'll be difficult to duplicate that. At the national championships, she can improve on her finishes there, but in conference you can't improve on first, first and first."
Florida hoisted the men's team championship trophy, while Georgia ran away with the title on the women's side. With the indoor season officially wrapped up, Ewen and the Sun Devils take the show outside next weekend. ASU's first meet will be one of three home meets during the 2018 outdoor season in the Baldy Castillo Invitational, March 16-17.
"One thing about coach [Brian] Blutreich though, he stresses the process and putting in work, so she and the other throwers will be ready to complete in May and June and I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do."
