STANFORD, Calif. – Opening its 2018 Pac-12 slate the No. 11 Arizona State women's gymnastics team (4-1) earned its fourth victory over a ranked opponent, defeating No. 20 Stanford, 196.250-195.650, Saturday afternoon in Burnham Pavilion.
Recording event scores of 48.875 (vault), 48.950 (bars), 49.325 (beam), 49.100 (floor), respectively, the team's 196.250 effort places them in the record books as the 30th best team total in program history.
Having posted a 196.475 at West Virginia on Jan. 14, the Gym Devils have surpassed the 196+ mark in consecutive road meets for the first time since 2006.
Leading the Arizona State effort was reigning Pac-12 Freshman/Newcomer of the Week Cairo Leonard-Baker with an all-around score of 39.450. Leonard-Baker ultimately finished second in the all-around behind Stanford's Elizabeth Price, who currently leads the nation in the category. The Oakland native also placed second on bars and floor.
Starting the meet on bars, Leonard-Baker led the Gym Devils with a 9.900, her second consecutive 9.9+ of the season. Junior Morgan Wilson posted a season-high 9.775, while junior Anne Kuhm added a 9.825 which earned her third-place.
Heading into the second rotation with a slight lead over the host Cardinal, ASU earned a respectable 48.875 on vault to hold onto the lead. The Gym Devils were led by a 9.800 by Wilson, which earned her third. Junior Katelyn Szafranski, sophomore Jessica Ginn, and Leonard-Baker all earned scores of 9.775.
The Gym Devils earned a 49.100 on floor to maintain the lead. Leonard-Baker once again led the Gym Devils by tying her career-high of 9.900. Katelyn Szafranski's solid landings earned her a career high 9.850 for third place. Junior Katelyn Lentz recorded a season-high 9.800 while Ginn posted a matching score.
ASU continues to improve on beam with solid routines and stuck dismounts for a season-high 49.325. Lentz led the Gym Devils with a career-high 9.900. Junior Justine Callis and Leonard-Baker both posted career-highs of 9.875. Senior and veteran performer Nichelle Christopherson capped off the rotation with another 9.875.
Kuhm also competed in the all-around tallying a 38.675.
Up next, the Gym Devils return home to Wells Fargo Arena to take on the No. 23 California Bears. The meet is slated for a 12 p.m. (Noon) MT start on Sunday, January 28 and will be broadcasted live on the Pac-12 Network.
