TEMPE, Ariz. -- Head coach Trisha Ford, and the Sun Devil softball team, announced this weekend the addition of three transfer student's to the Sun Devil softball roster. Infielder Jade Gortarez, catcher Maddie Hackbarth, and outfielder Kindra Hackbarth have all signed to compete for Arizona State in the spring of 2018.
Gortarez, who comes to ASU following a season with Texas, began her playing career on the baseball diamond. The Riverside, Calif., native played travel ball with the Arcadia Astros (baseball), and earned earning a Golden Arm Award as well as a Max Han Coaches Award. She batted an impressive .304 and posted a 1.00 ERA during the 2016 travel ball season.
This past season, Gortarez appeared in 44 games for the Longhorns, including 40 games in the starting lineup. She posted a .246 batting average in her first year of collegiate softball that included six extra base hits and 17 RBI. Playing predominantly in the middle infield, Gortarez finished the year with a .967 fielding percentage.
Maddi Hackbarth will make her way to Tempe, following a season with Fresno State. Maddi, a primary catcher, played in 26 games during the 2017 season, including 20 appearances in the starting lineup.
Maddi burst onto the collegiate softball scene in style, posting a two-hit effort against Oregon that included a double and a home run. Maddie would go on to end her first season of college ball hitting .185 on the season, with a .243 on-base percentage and .292 slugging percentage, mostly in the tail end of the lineup.
Prior to joining the Bulldogs, Maddi was a high school All-American (Flo-Softball) at Oakdale. She earned All-Valley Oak League recognition (2014-16) as well as Valley Oak League Defensive Player of the Year honors following the 2015-16 season. Maddi was also named to the All-State and District teams in 2016.
Kindra Hackbarth (twin sister of Maddi) also decided to make the move from Fresno to join the ASU squad for the 2018 season. A true outfielder, Kindra played in 44 games for the Bulldogs in 2017, where she hit at a .237 clip while maintaining a .256 on-base percentage and .342 slugging percentage in the top of the order.
Prior to joining Fresno State, Kindra was named an All-American by FloSoftball, Western Region, MaxPreps and Premier Girls Fastpitch following a successful high school career at Oakdale High School in Oakdale, Calif. Kindra was named Oakdale HS Offensive Player of the Year in 2013, '15 and '16, while also earning All-State honors in 2014 and '16. She was also named the Valley Oak League Most Valuable Player following the 2013 and '16 seasons.
