The 2016-17 Sun Devil men's basketball regular season will begin on Veteran's Day (Friday, Nov. 11) with a 7 p.m. MT tip against Portland State and conclude with a visit from CBS on Saturday, March 4, for a 2 p.m. Territorial Cup Series matchup, as the Pac-12 has announced the full men's basketball schedule. The Sun Devils will make at least 10 appearances on an ESPN station, has three Fox Sports 1 tilts and the CBS matchup to finish the season before heading to the Pac-12 Tournament in Las Vegas at T-Mobile Arena March 8-11.
The Sun Devils, 58-14 (.806) at home the past four seasons, will have their first five home games broadcast by Pac-12 Networks before it hosts an ESPN2 broadcast at 7 p.m. against Creighton.
ASU will open the Pac-12 season on the road for the sixth time in the past nine seasons, as the Sun Devils open at Stanford on Friday, Dec. 30 at 6 p.m. PT/7 p.m. MT and then play on New Year's Day at 7 p.m. PT/8 p.m. MT at California, with both games on Pac-12 Network. The Sun Devils have won two of the past three at Haas Pavilion and are 5-2 vs. Golden Bears in past seven meetings. ASU's 35-point 79-44 win Jan. 22, 2015, at Cal is its biggest Pac-12 win since since it beat Washington State by 41 (96-55) on Jan. 11, 2003, and the second-largest Pac-12 road win in school history, as it dealt the Golden Bears their second-largest home loss. ASU will attempt to win at Stanford for the first time since the 2009-10 season.
ASU will host Colorado (Jan. 5/7 p.m.) and Utah (Jan. 7/3 p.m.) for the first time since 2014-15, as these teams missed the Arizona road swing in 2015-16. ASU will not visit Utah or Colorado in 2016-17. ASU is 3-1 vs. Colorado in Tempe (including a current three-game win streak) and also 3-1 vs. the Utes.
ASU plays host to Washington (Jan. 25) and WSU (Jan. 29) in late January. ASU holds a 41-36 series lead over WSU and has won five of the past six, nine of the past 12 overall and six straight in Tempe.
The Sun Devils host the Bay Area schools on Feb. 8 (Cal) and Feb. 11 (Stanford) as it swept the Bay Area homestand for the first time since 1994-95 in 2013-14 and did the same in 2014-15. ASU has swept Cal in two of the past three seasons (after not sweeping them since 1999-2000). ASU has topped Stanford in each of the past three seasons in Tempe.
ASU plays in Seattle on Feb. 16 for a FOX Sports 1 8 p.m. PT tip and then plays in Pullman on the Pac-12 Network on Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. PT. Pullman and Seattle were bad and good for ASU the past two years. Last year ASU won in Pullman but lost in Seattle. In 2014-15, ASU lost a tough one in Pullman but bounced back with Sunday win in Seattle.
UCLA (Feb. 23) and USC (Feb. 26) come to Tempe in late February. ASU sent the eventual Pac-12 champions Bruins home with a 78-60 loss on Jan. 26, 2013 and then ASU topped the Bruins on James Harden night (Feb. 18, 2014). The teams did not visit in 2014-15. ASU topped USC in Tempe but fell to UCLA last season. ASU is 8-1 vs. USC in Tempe in the past nine meetings including a 74-67 win over #23 USC on Feb. 12, 2016, and has won four straight vs. USC in Tempe.
