Cozumel, Mexico – Katie Gorczyca, the first place finisher at Sept. 5's Central Regional Qualifier and one of the first ever NCAA triathlon championship qualifiers from ASU, will compete at the ITU World Triathlon Championships on Friday.
Gorczyca's participation is towards the end of the week-long event (Sept. 11-18) as she will compete for Team USA in the U23 Women's World Championship on Friday, Sept. 16 at 7:30 am ET/4:30 am AZ time. The entire event includes 5,000 participants with an opening ceremony and nations parade.
The U23 women's competition will feature 40 participants from around the world competing in an Olympic distance triathlon – 1.5 km swim, 40 km bike, 10 km run – at Fonatur Triathlon Park. The swim portion takes place in the Caribbean Sea.
This week's championship event is the final of eight international events on the ITU World Triathlon Series calendar for 2016.
