WINDERMERE, FL. – Sun Devil senior Jared du Toit recorded his second-consecutive top-10 finish as the Arizona State men's golf team placed third at the prestigious Tavistock Collegiate Invitational Tuesday. Representing one of just three teams to record a round under par on the day at the challenging par-72, 7544-yard Isleworth Country Club, the Maroon and Gold propelled by a collective one-under 287, jumped four spots en route to garnering their second top-five finish of the fall campaign.
"I am really having fun competing with this team," said head coach Matt Thurmond. "It was another lively event full of great team energy. I am most excited that for a second tournament in a row we posted our best outing in the final round."
No. 7 Florida earned team champion honors signing off on a three-day, 20-under 844 (283-277-284), while their standout Alejandro Tosti medaled, closing at play at 8-under, 208.
Arizona State earned quality head-to-head victories, including wins over No. 1 Illinois, No. 6 Texas Tech, and No. 9 North Carolina.
Currently ranked the top-Canadian amateur, du Toit continues to impress early in his senior campaign.
Firing a third round three-under 69, the Canuck finished three shots off the pace in a seventh-place tie with Jorge Garcia of Florida. Tallying an eagle and three birdies to just two bogeys, his 69 accounted for the second-best outing of the day. He now has seven top-10 finishes to his credit in his two-year Sun Devil career.
Freshman Blake Wagoner notched the first top-25 finish of his promising collegiate career. Collecting 3-over 219, Wagoner tied for 20th. Also among the top-25 finishers was fellow freshman Alejandro Del Rey Gonzalez who recorded an impressive 2-under 70, propelling the Spaniard 25 spots into 23rd-place tie.
Thurmond was quick to recognize the play of impact freshmen Wagoner and Del Rey Gonzalez, "Having a couple of young players finish in the top-25 on a challenging course like Isleworth in field like that is encouraging and gives us even more hope for the season ahead. Their continued improvement is promising."
Rounding out the Arizona State starting five Ki Taek Lee posted a two-over 74 to finish tied for 36th, while freshman Anthony Truong carded a 3-over 75 to close play positioned in 41st place.
The Sun Devils will take a 12-day hiatus from tournament play, before traveling to Princeville, Hawaii for the Princeville Cup hosted Feb. 2-4.
